While many multinational companies, in the technology and consulting sectors engage their alumni very well through structured programmes and well-defined strategies, ‘out of sight is out of mind’ is a reality for most workplaces.

Pay transparency is a journey and does not begin and end with listing salaries on job postings. Rather, it is an approach to being forthright and upfront about both expectations and what is possible, in terms of rewards, benefits and compensation through the lifecycle of an employee. For instance, sharing what the interview process looks like, and what are the attributes that will be looked for are also important elements of transparency. 

‘While not every woman experiences pregnancy, every one of us experiences menopause,’ continues Dr. Ranjani. If every woman will experience menopause at some point in their life then it is also equally essential for workplaces to be sensitised about this life stage, as most women are likely to be working in significant positions during this stage. Workplaces must understand the implications it may have on women employees’ health and also put in place support mechanisms for those who experience challenges.

Four decades ago, American Sociologist Arlie Russel Hochschild coined and defined the term ‘emotional labour’ in her award-winning book, ‘The Managed Heart: Commercialization of Human Feeling’, as the act of having to regulate or manage one’s emotions to fulfil a professional purpose. Hochschild argued that a third of American men and half of American women held jobs that involved emotional management to serve a commercial purpose.

Divorce and infertility are just two examples of a larger phenomenon called ‘invisible grief’, whereby a person grieves the loss of a future scenario they dreamt of. While this kind of grief doesn’t fall into the traditional grief that comes with mourning the death of a loved one, it may be even harder to navigate, because it is often isolating and not acknowledged by others.
